Our weather is not going to change very much over the next few days, but there will be a slightly better chance for at least some isolated showers or storms today through Sunday. Models have been consistent on showing a weak front and a good chance for downpours on Monday, but it won't affect our warm temperature trend dramatically.

There is a high rip current risk for Galveston and surrounding beaches through this evening. Be very cautious if you plan to go for a swim at the beach. Humidity is increasing across the area with isolated rain expected to return the next few days. Rain chances will be limited to 20% through Saturday with a higher chance for rain coming Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will likely stay a bit above average in the middle 90s the rest of this week. But with more rain around early next week, we'll shave a few degrees off those temperatures and come back down to the low 90s. Fall officially begins early Saturday morning but that summertime pattern will still be holding strong for Houston.

Tropical Weather Forecast - September 20, 2023

Hurricane Nigel is a bit weaker but is still a category one hurricane now to the NE of Bermuda. It is expected to quickly move farther away from the US losing tropical characteristics by this weekend. Two other areas are being monitored for possible tropical development. One area is off of the east coast of Florida and has a 40% chance for development over the next 7 days. A potential tropical or subtropical area of low pressure is expected to develop that could bring some heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic by this weekend. Another tropical wave has pushed off the west coast of Africa with a high chance to become a tropical depression or storm by this weekend. The next two names on the list are Ophelia and Philippe.

Warm and more humid air is back and muggy air should stay with us through the weekend. Rain chances are slim today, but rise to around 10-20% tomorrow through Saturday (which is the official start of Fall). Storms look more likely Monday, but possibly as early as Sunday. Overall, no cool air appears to be on the way over the next week or two.

Air Quality Alert for higher ozone levels remains in effect through this evening for the Houston area. Strong to severe storms will stay to our north this evening around DFW and OKC. We will remain dry with lower humidity. Look for more humidity the rest of this week with isolated rain. Slightly better rain chances are set to return early next week. Temperatures should remain a bit above average in the low to middle 90s but below records.

We remain in what is typically a very active period of hurricane season. There are no tropical systems heading towards SE Texas. But Hurricane Nigel has grown to a Category 2 Hurricane east of Bermuda. Nigel is not a threat to the US as it will race NE later this week and track up close to Iceland by early next week! A non-tropical low could form along the east coast of Florida the next few days. This low could become subtropical. Regardless it will bring the threat for some heavy rain & gusty wind to Florida & the Carolinas. Another Tropical wave coming off the west coast of Africa has a high chance to develop into a tropical storm or hurricane. The next name on the list is Ophelia.

We're going to enjoy another pleasant, warm day across the Houston area with high temps running about 3-5 degrees above average through this weekend. Isolated showers are possibly late this week, but overall still a pretty quiet pattern. So far, no threats from the tropics for Texas.

Some areas picked up between 2-8" of rain between Thursday and Saturday which helped with our drought conditions. Tuesday will be another nice outdoors day with dry weather and temperatures climbing to the low 90s. Look for low rain chances to return Wednesday through Saturday with better chances for spotty storms Sunday and Monday. Hurricane Nigel is not expected to threaten the US and should stay east of Bermuda. It's moving NW but will turn NE later this week.

Tropical Weather Forecast - September 18, 2023

Lee and Margot have become Post-Tropical and are weakening. But hurricane Nigel is getting stronger and is forecast to be near major hurricane strength Tuesday. Nigel should pass well east of Bermuda late Tuesday & race NE away from the US & Canada after that. Possible non-tropical low may form near SE US coast later this week with a low chance for subtropical development. Another Tropical wave is expected to roll off the western African coast Wednesday and this system has a high chance to turn into tropical storm Ophelia late this week.

A pattern change has arrived, and rain looks likely for the next few days. Our long-lived "heat dome" has dissipated and a more active jet stream pattern will replace it through at least Saturday. A few heavy downpours are possible from late today through Thursday and Friday. High temps should be held to at or even below average which will be a nice break. Today is the 15th anniversary of Hurricane Ike making landfall in Galveston, but we are currently not under any tropical threats.
