Tropical Weather Update - September 23, 2023
Tropical Storm Ophelia made landfall in North Carolina with near hurricane-force winds on Saturday morning. And another tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic.

Officially, it's fall but it still feels like summer in southeast Texas. Beyhivers will have to battle some heat and humidity heading down to NRG, but rain will be very isolated until late Sunday. Things then take a bit more of a soggy turn through middle of next week. That will take an edge off of temperatures, but we'll still be on the seasonably warm side. Tropical Storm Ophelia made landfall along the Emerald Isle of North Carolina this morning, with another named storm soon likely in the central Atlantic.

Hurricane Watch issued for North Carolina coast ahead of Tropical Storm Ophelia’s powerful impacts, landfall
Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen organized and strengthened into Tropical Storm Ophelia on Friday as it moves toward North Carolina. A Hurricane watch has been issued for parts of eastern North Carolina due to the storm reaching near hurricane strength.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 16 has turned into Tropical Storm Ophelia just south of the North Carolina coast. It is already close to hurricane strength with 70 mph winds and could briefly become a hurricane before making landfall early Saturday morning along the North Carolina coast. Tropical storm force winds, storm surge and the threat for coastal flooding will be the main threats. Ophelia should quickly weaken to a tropical depression by Sunday. Nigel is in the north Atlantic and has lost tropical characteristics. Another strong tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic has a high chance of becoming Tropical Storm Philippe this weekend.

Folks along the SE U.S. coast now have a potential tropical storm to worry about. Potential tropical cyclone 16 has formed off of the SE US coast and is expected to become a tropical storm by Friday. Tropical Storm Warnings are out for parts of the Carolina and Mid-Atlantic coasts. Storm surge warnings are also in effect with this system expected to hit the Carolina coast late Friday into Saturday. Flooding, strong winds and storm surge are the main threats. Hurricane Nigel is racing away from the US & should lose tropical characteristics by Friday. A strong tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic has a high chance to become a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm by this weekend.
