Tropical Weather Forecast - October 4, 2023
There's still a few months left in hurricane season and we still have one tropical storm to track at this time. Philippe is moving north away from the Caribbean Islands and barely hanging on as a tropical storm. However, it is forecast to become a stronger tropical storm later this week and should track over Bermuda Thursday into Friday where Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect. Then Philippe will have a shot at making landfall this weekend around northern New England or western parts of Nova Scotia in Canada. Philippe should remain a tropical storm through the weekend and could bring some heavy rain and strong wind to parts of the NE late this week. No other tropical cyclones are expected in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean over the next few days.

Philippe is starting to move away from the Caribbean Islands but could track over Bermuda late Thursday into Friday. Philippe is moving north but the overall track has shifted west which could take it up between Maine and Nova Scotia by this weekend. No other Tropical cyclone formation is expected over the next few days.

Rina has dissipated but Philippe remains a tropical storm near the northern Leeward Islands with 50 mph winds. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Barbuda and for Antigua. Philippe should gradually gain strength as it moves north over the next few days. Tropical Storm Philippe will stay away from the US but should be near hurricane strength when it passes east of Bermuda by Friday. The rest of the Atlantic Basin remains quiet for now but hurricane season runs through the end of November. So stay alert!

Two tropical storms are sitting side by side in the central Atlantic, Tropical Storm Philippe and newly formed Tropical Storm Rina just to the east of Philippe. Both systems are expected to remain tropical storms for the next 5 days and not head toward SE Texas. Things are quiet for now across the rest of the Atlantic Basin. But with two more months to go in hurricane season, make sure to stay alert for possible development with water temperatures in the Gulf, Caribbean & Atlantic still super warm.

Philippe should get close to the Northern Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico by this weekend with the potential for 2-4" of rain. But Philippe is forecast to lose tropical characteristics and weaken to a remnant low by this weekend. Tropical wave in the east central Atlantic still has a high chance to become a tropical depression or possibly Tropical Storm Rina over the next day or two.

A disturbance in the south central Gulf of Mexico is being monitored for tropical development as it moves west. There's only a tiny chance for it to develop into a tropical system and chances likely won't improve later this week. So at this point, impacts are unlikely for SE TX. Philippe is still a Tropical storm in the central Atlantic that should remain over water for the next 5 days. Philippe will likely track north of the Lesser Antilles. Invest 91-L is in the far east Atlantic with still a high chance to become a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next 7 days. The next name on the list is Rina.

It is already close to hurricane strength with 70 mph winds and could briefly become a hurricane before making landfall early Saturday morning along the North Carolina coast. Tropical storm force winds, storm surge and the threat for coastal flooding will be the main threats. Ophelia should quickly weaken to a tropical depression by Sunday. Nigel is in the north Atlantic and has lost tropical characteristics. Another strong tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic has a high chance of becoming Tropical Storm Philippe this weekend.

Tropical Storm Warnings are out for parts of the Carolina and Mid-Atlantic coasts. Storm surge warnings are also in effect with this system expected to hit the Carolina coast late Friday into Saturday. Flooding, strong winds and storm surge are the main threats. Hurricane Nigel is racing away from the US & should lose tropical characteristics by Friday. A strong tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic has a high chance to become a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm by this weekend.

It is expected to quickly move farther away from the US losing tropical characteristics by this weekend. Two other areas are being monitored for possible tropical development. One area is off of the east coast of Florida and has a 40% chance for development over the next 7 days. A potential tropical or subtropical area of low pressure is expected to develop that could bring some heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic by this weekend. Another tropical wave has pushed off the west coast of Africa with a high chance to become a tropical depression or storm by this weekend. The next two names on the list are Ophelia and Philippe.
