Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel underwent successful surgery Wednesday morning.

General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced that doctors removed the hook of the hamate bone in Gurriel's left hand.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Thomas Mehlhoff at Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston.

Gurriel left camp on Tuesday morning to fly to Houston to be examined after experiencing discomfort in his left hand.

He is expected to miss approximately six weeks of action on the baseball fields.

In his one Spring Training game this Spring, he went 1-for-2 with a solo HR.
