Texas Southern receiver Derrick Griffin removed from team

FOX 26 Sports has learned Texas Southern wide receiver Derrick Griffin has been removed from the team for the rest of the 2016 season for a violation of teams.

The 6-7 receiver can return to the football team in 2017.

In 2016 Griffin played in one game, and had six receptions for 90 yards and one touchdown.

Last season he had 36 catches for 709 yards and 11 touchdowns.

While removed from the football team, Griffin will play basketballl for Texas Southern this season according to TSU men's coach Mike Davis.

Davis did not discuss what happened with Griffin and the football team.

Last season Griffin was the best basketball player in the SWAC, earning Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
