Weatherford mom allegedly murders her one-day-old baby

A Weatherford mother faces a capital murder charge for allegedly killing her one-day-old baby.

Police said the mom, Ashley Nicole Blades, 22, admitted in an interview that she gave birth to a baby on Monday morning at her home. Later that day she tried to keep the baby quiet so she covered the infant’s nose and mouth “for a minute or two” and after that the mom said the baby never cried or “seemed the same.”

Police were first notified of a problem on Tuesday afternoon when the woman’s estranged husband, and the baby’s alleged father, called police concerned that the woman had harmed the child. The man said the estranged wife told him she had given birth to their baby and that it was dead.

Officers then went to the woman’s house in Weatherford to perform a welfare check and asked Blades where the baby was. She told them it was in the trunk of her car.

The mother gave officers the keys to the car, where they found the dead baby wrapped in a towel inside a plastic bag.

Police said they haven’t found any evidence Blades tried to get medical attention for her baby.

An autopsy is pending on the dead child.

Blades was taken into custody on Tuesday and booked into the Parker County Jail on the charge of Capital Murder and Abuse of Corpse.

Blades lived at home with her parents, where visitors came by Wednesday night.

Her family respectfully asked for privacy.

It’s not clear if Blades had mental health issues.

Investigators interviewed her parents, who told police they didn’t know Blades gave birth in their home.
