Warren Jeffs trying to smuggle messages out of prison, slayings at Dallas homeless camp

TEXAS (AP) - ADDISON, Texas (AP) — Authorities say an off-duty police officer in suburban Dallas was involved in a shooting that left one person dead and another injured. Addison spokesman Dan Reed says the shooting happened Sunday evening. Reed says one person was killed and the other was taken to a hospital. The officer was not injured.

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston police officer has fatally shot an unarmed man suspected of damaging a traffic sign and charging toward the officer three times. The officer was on patrol Saturday afternoon when he saw an agitated man damage a street sign, pace and yell obscenities. Police say the officer tried to calm the man but the suspect charged at him twice. The officer shot the man when he came at him a third time.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas prison officials are playing a hide-and-seek game with former polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs. Officials say his wives tried to smuggle tiny microphones in hollowed-out watches during two visits to Jeffs. A female visitor tried to conceal an object in her hair. His phone privileges were temporarily taken away because followers put him on speakerphone. And prison officials blocked some mail from Jeffs because it appeared to be written in code.

DALLAS (AP) — Two recent slayings at a Dallas homeless camp under an Interstate 45 bridge have led city officials to make plans to close the site by early May. About 250 people live in what's known as Tent City. Authorities hope that many of the homeless can soon be placed in temporary or more permanent shelters. City officials and homeless advocates are expected to be hashing out housing details in coming weeks.
