Raising awareness in the fight to cure blood cancer

It was a special night for some special children and volunteers in Houston at a kickoff event to raise awareness and money to cure blood cancers.

Alejandro Mendoza was named 'Boy of the Year' by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Kayla Yearwood was named 'Girl of the Year'.  

The Texas Gulf Chapter presented the "Outstanding Television Media Award" to FOX 26 Vice President and General Manager D'Artagnan Bebel for the station's commitment to educating the public  about blood cancers.

Tonight's celebration at Saks Fifth Avenue kicked off the LLS 2017 "Man and Woman of the Year" fund-raising campaign.

17 Houstonians are in the running to raise the most money for the cause. They will try to beat last year's record-breaking $1 million.
