Police help save woman, her children from burning building

One family is thankful to be alive. Two Houston Police Department officers and neighbors worked together to rescue a woman and her young children from a burning apartment unit. Fire ripped through the Vista Verde complex on Broadway Street at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday in southwest Houston. The flames were put out by 6:20 p.m.

The deputy fire chief told FOX 26 News that the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second and third floors of the building. At least eight units were affected by the fire and at least ten people are searching for a place to live. The American Red Cross was called to help those people.

Witnesses tell FOX 26 that residents helped to push the officers over the high fence so they could get to the building. Young children had to be thrown from the windows, but everyone made it out safe, including a mother and her children. Only one woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
