Missouri City USPS facility shooting leaves employee dead, suspect identified

An employee is dead and another is in custody after an active shooter situation unfolded at a U.S. Postal Service facility in Missouri City on Monday night, officials say.

The Missouri City Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service responded to reports of an active shooter at the processing facility along U.S. 90 East around 10 p.m.

The investigation was still in the preliminary stages, but the USPIS did confirm that an active shooter incident occurred, leaving one employee, Kevin J. Hines, dead.

USPIS also says another employee was taken into custody and has been identified as Derrick Deon Lott. He has been charged with murder and is in Fort Bend County Jail.

His bond was set to $2 million on Wednesday.

The facility was evacuated, and officials said the employees were being accounted for. No other injuries have been reported. There is no threat to the public, authorities say.

There is limited information at this time on how the shooting unfolded. The investigation is ongoing.

"This was a tragic and senseless act of violence," said U.S. Postal Inspection Service Acting Inspector in Charge Mona Hernandez, Houston Division. "Our employees deserve to feel safe when they come to work. Postal inspectors are working tirelessly to ensure justice is served on behalf of Kevin Hines, his family, and all of the employees who work in this facility."
