Man drives into Dickinson bayou, his body later recovered

DICKINSON, Texas (FOX 26) — It was a rescue effort in vain as volunteers from the Dickinson and League City fire departments, along with Dickinson police, spent hours trying to rescue and later recover the man.

The incident was reported at around 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses say that an elderly man drove right into the Dickinson Bayou public boat ramp, which is located near the 5000 block of State Highway 3.

Dozens of people helped with the search. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter assisted with a spotlight as the skies were darker.

Investigators have not confirmed if this was an accident or if the man intentionally drove into the water.

"Witnesses stated that they observed a vehicle drive headfirst into the bayou boat ramp," Dickinson Police Department Detective Lupe Vasquez tells FOX 26 News. "League City dive team came out and assisted with the search and rescue and we did locate a passenger inside the vehicle who was deceased."

Dickinson police will not release the name of the man until they notify his family.
