HPD: Boy, 2, dies from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound

Houston police say a 2-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting happened at around 12:50 p.m. in the 8400 block of  Knox in Acres Homes.

When investigators arrived at the scene, the boy had already been rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives say the gun was found on the couch and that at the time both parents were home.

An ambulance was brought out to the scene for the father and he was later taken in for questioning. No charges have been filed at this time.

Police are urging all gun owners to secure their weapons.

“To all gun owners you need to secure the weapons, whether it’s a trigger guard or some sort of safe you need to keep the weapons secure, so that nothing like this can happen in the future. This is a tragic, tragic incident where a two-year-old lost his life by what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and unfortunately it’s something that didn’t need to happen,” says Captain David Angelo with the special victims unit.
