Coast Guard suspends search for missing cruise ship crew member

The U.S. Coast Guard is suspending the search for a missing cruise ship crew member that was initiated approximately 170 miles southeast of Galveston.

Coast Guard Eighth District watchstanders learned at around 4:30 a.m. Monday that a 39-year-old crew member Norman DeCastro from the Philippines, who was aboard the Royal Caribbean International Liberty of the Seas ship, was missing and was last seen at 10:30 p.m. Sunday on the ship’s closed-circuit television system.

An HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Air Station Corpus Christi, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Alabama, the crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Manowar, an 87-foot patrol boat from Galveston, and the Coast Guard Cutter Pompano, an 87-foot patrol boat from Gulfport, Mississippi. assisted in the search effort.
