Bill proposal would allow Texans to buy liquor on Sundays

Texans may soon be able to buy liquor on Sundays. That's if a state representative gets his proposed bill passed.

State Rep. Richard Peña Raymond (D-Laredo) introduced House Bill 1100, which would make it legal for liquor stores to be open seven days a week.

The proposed bill, which was filed on Jan. 25, would allow liquor stores to open between noon and 10 p.m. on Sundays and between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. the rest of the week.

But there is a catch: Stores would still not be allowed to sell liquor on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

The current law is part of Texas' Blue Laws, which were made to restrict Sunday activities for religious reasons, and so people would take the day to worship or rest.

It included items such as furniture, cameras, jewelry and televisions.

But now the Blue Laws only apply to liquor and car sales.

If Raymond's bill is passed, it would take effect Sept. 1, 2019.
