Arrest in UTHealth Science Center parking lot shooting
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Following the shooting of an employee outside the UTHealth Science Center, police have arrested a suspect.
UT police and the Houston Police Department arrested Wilbert "Will" Burse, 36, after university police investigators were able to find his vehicle in an apartment complex on North Vista Drive near the North Freeway service road.
With help from the Houston PD North Division Tact and Warrant Execution Team, officers were able to find Burse hiding in a friend's apartment where he was later taken into custody without incident.
Burse is charged with aggravated assault, deadly weapon and family violence.
The shooting was reported at 8:53 a.m. Friday at the UTHealth University Center Tower building in the 7000 block Fannin. The UTHealth employee, who is Burse's estranged girlfriend, was found with gunshot wound to her leg. Police say she had argued with Burse on Thursday night. He met her in the parking lot to deliver her cell phone when the shooting was reported.
The shooting suspect drove away from the complex. The woman who was shot was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency notifications were sent to UTHealth employees with updates provided until the "all clear" was given.
During the search for Burse, a gun matching the description of the weapon used during the shooting was recovered by UTP-H in the 1800 block of West Road.
