Alvin teacher arrested on sexual assault charge

ALVIN, Texas (FOX 26) - Steve Cortez, 28, is in police custody and faces a felony charge of sexual assault against a female student. The teacher and coach worked at Harby Jr. High School. The Alvin Police Department informed the Alvin Independent School District about the incident after receiving a report over the weekend. Cortez was immediately cut off from having contact with the students and the parents of the victim were notified.

While the investigation was taking place, Cortez submitted his resignation to Alvin ISD. The district sent out the following letter to parents about the incident:

Cortez faces a felony charge of sexually assault of a child. His bond is set at $75,000.
