621 area code goes into effect in Greater Houston area

There's a new area code in town, so don't be surprised when you get a call from a 621 phone number.

On Thursday, Houston's newest area code, 621, will begin to be assigned to customers requesting a new number in the Houston-area code overlay region, or even requesting new service, adding a line, or moving their service.

The backstory:

Back in 2023, the Public Utility Commission of Texas granted approval for the additional area code because of the population growth in the greater Houston area.

Local perspective:

The 621 area code will encompass the Greater Houston metropolitan area and surrounding communities such as Baytown, League City, Missouri City, Pasadena, Pearland, Sugar Land, and The Woodlands, even stretching from Harris County into Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, and Waller counties.

Currently, existing area codes 281, 346, 713, and 832 will remain in use and will not change.

The Source: The Public Utility Commission of Texas shared information about the new area code in a press release.
