2015 Retail Report Reveals Background Screening Trends

CHAPIN, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul 15, 2015--The 2015 Retail Industry Background Screening Benchmarking Report, prepared by GIS and released in early July, has revealed increased impact of state and local laws and decreased impact of EEOC guidance, among other thought provoking items.

The annual report takes an in-depth look at the screening and hiring programs of retailers large and small, all to help retailers understand how their program compares to their peers'.

The report identifies biggest hiring challenges (finding and hiring qualified employees), why retailers run checks (for a safer work environment) and when background checks are performed (generally upon conditional offer, not before). The report also provides information on specifics of certain checks: years of addresses used for criminal history searches, whether aliases are searched, types of drug tests, etc.

"As in years past, companies are focusing on running background checks that have a strong business necessity, like an MVR check only on company drivers," said Matt Robbins, Vice President of Sales and resident retail industry expert at GIS. "Even though they're indicating less impact from EEOC guidance – likely because fewer interpretations have come this year than in years past – retailers still have a healthy respect for the law, which in many cases is focusing on business necessity."
