Wilmer Cabrera will coach the Houston Dynamo
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Calling this "a beautiful opportunity," Wilmer Cabrera, coach of the Dynamo affiliate Rio Grande Valley FC in the USL, will officially be introduced Friday as the new coach of the Dynamo.
The Dynamo’s decision comes less than a day after interim coach Wade Barrett was told he would not be retained on a permanent basis.
"It's a big responsibility," Cabrera said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports after arriving in Houston. "It's a big club with a big history.
"I took the responsibility because I'm ready, because I've been preparing myself to do it. I'm ready to do it and do it well."
Cabrera led the Toros to a second-place finish in the USL Western conference in RGV FC's first season of play.
In 2014 Cabrera was named the head coach of the MLS franchise, Chivas USA, which has since been dissolved.
He is a former assistant coach with the Colorado Rapids of MLS and was head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team from 2007 to 2012.
Cabrera played for Colombia from 1989-1998, and was part of two World Cup teams.
"I played 20 years," Cabrera said. "I played at a high level. I played at all levels possible.
"I'm from South America. I'm from Colombia, but all my years as a coach were developed here in the United States. I know the culture here in the United States, because I've been coaching the past 14 years here. This is my area of expertise.
"I know the soccer here. I've brought different flavors from where I'm coming from. I think it fits perfectly for the purposes of the Houston Dynamo."
