Life of Guy V. Lewis will be celebrated on Thursday

The funeral for Hall of Fame basketball Coach Guy V. Lewis will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the First Methodist Church in downtown Houston.

The beloved former University of Houston coach passed away Thanksgiving Day at his nursing home in Kyle, near Austin, at the age of 93.

Lewis, who led the Cougars to Five Final Fours and helped pave the way for African-Americans to play college basketball in the South, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame two years ago.

His son, Terry, said while this is a solemn occasion, the funeral will also be a celebration of his father’s life.

“I think it’s very appropriate that his memory is honored,” Terry Lewis said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

“Dad loved people. He loved basketball. He loved the city of Houston. He loved Houston as much as anybody that lived in Houston.

“No doubt in my mind, it is a celebration of his life.”
