Two children struck, one killed in hit-and-run near Doss Park

Community members gathered on Friday at a memorial along the fence of Doss Park. They lay flowers, balloons and messages for a 5-year-old boy who lost his life there on Thursday night.

According to police reports, Jayden Aguilar and 3-year-old Jeremiah were playing ball at Doss Park. At around 8:40 p.m., both boys were struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on the 2300 block of Fallbrook Drive.

When asked why the boys were in the street, Sergeant S. Wolverton explained they were doing something children at the park do all the time.

"I'm being told it's pretty common that when they're playing out in that field area when a ball goes over the fence and into the roadway," explained Sgt. Wolverton of the Harris County Sheriff's Office Traffic Control Division.

"They'll push that fence outward, crawl under the fence and go retrieve that ball," added Sgt. Wolverton.

Police report the 5-year-old died from his injuries. The younger boy was taken to Texas Children's Hospital in serious condition. His family told FOX 26 News that they were spending Friday by his side.

Authorities are still looking to identify the vehicle. Witnesses say it appeared to be a sport utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Avalanche, of a red or dark color.

One witness, who had just finished playing a baseball game at the park when the incident occurred, told FOX 26 the vehicle did pause after striking the boys before continuing off westbound.
