Teen dies, another in critical condition after car falls 20 feet from overpass

One teenager is dead and another is in critical condition after the Mercedes they were in fell about 20 feet from an overpass.

Police say an officer saw a Mercedes traveling at a high rate of speed on the Katy Freeway Service Road. Authorities say the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop but lost sight of the vehicle after the driver ran a red light at the Katy Freeway and Silber.

Witnesses told investigators the driver of the Mercedes ran a red light at North Post Oak, lost control of the car, went over a concrete barrier and fell about 20 feet from the overpass.

The car landed upside down and caught fire. A witness says good Samaritans at the scene pulled the driver out and began CPR and tried to get the passenger out. Witnesses alerted police to the crash.

Both teens were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police say the 16-year-old passenger died at the hospital and the driver is in critical condition.
