Over 1.7 million ladders sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s recalled over serious fall hazard

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially start car recalls after receiving complaints from consumers.
More than 1.7 million attic stairway ladders sold nationwide have been recalled after reports that critical bolts can break during use, creating a serious fall hazard that could result in severe injury or death.
The recall was announced Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall affects 1,770,000 Louisville, Featherlite, Lite & Century Attic Stairway Ladders equipped with gas struts. An additional 13,054 units were sold in Canada.
According to the recall notice, the ladders' spreader bolts can fail while the ladder is in use, increasing the risk that a user could fall.

The manufacturer has received 11 reports of bolts breaking, including one incident in which a consumer suffered injuries to the neck, head and back.
The recalled products include both aluminum- and wood-frame attic stairway ladders with handrails that fold into the ceiling.

They were sold in multiple frame sizes designed to fit attic openings measuring 22.5, 25.5 and 30 inches wide, and 54 or 60 inches long, for ceiling heights ranging from 7 feet, 8 inches to 12 feet. The brand name and model number are printed on the inside of the attic door.
The recalled ladders were sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, Do it Best, Orgill and other retailers nationwide, as well as online through Amazon, between November 2012 and July 2026. Prices ranged from approximately $170 to $600.

Owners should register for a free repair kit by visiting the recall website and have the ladder's model number available during registration. If the ladder is included in the recall, the company will provide a repair kit containing two replacement spreader bolts, washers and lock nuts, along with installation instructions.
