Man injured in officer-involved shooting in Houston's Midwest area

HOUSTON - A man is in the hospital after being shot by police early Sunday morning. It happened just before 3 a.m. near the intersection of Hillcroft Ave and Richmond Ave. in Houston's Midwest area.
The crash
What we know:
Police were called to a hit-and-run crash report in that area. When they arrived, they found one of the vehicles involved and a man was inside the vehicle.
The man's name was not released, but he is described as a black man in his 40s.
Witnesses told police another vehicle involved, possibly a black pickup truck, left the scene before officers arrived.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and if there are any other vehicles involved.
The shooting
What we know:
Police say he got out of the car holding a gun, ignored the officer's commands to drop it and started towards them.
According to Houston Police, two police officers fired their weapons, and the suspect was hit at least once in the lower extremities.
He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
No officers were hurt in the shooting.
What we don't know:
Police say they do not know if the man fired his weapon at the officers, but they say the gun was clearly visible on the officers' body cameras. That footage is expected to be released within 30 days.
What's next:
Both officers will be placed on paid administrative duty while they go through the critical incident protocol. According to Assistant Chief Wyatt Martin, as soon as they clear the protocol, they will be placed back on active duty.
