Houston sports fans loved President George H.W. Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush

A moment of silence, a time to reflect. At Sunday night's Houston Texans game, the team honored President George H.W. Bush and how committed he was to supporting them.

“I mean, I cried whenever they had a moment of silence. It was just so sad,” says Tracy Mason, who can recall seeing the president and First Lady Barbara Bush regularly.

"We actually used to see him come out on the golf cart, come out of the tunnel, go down, everybody would cheer for him." Mason says.  "When we first started coming to the games, we actually met him and Barbara because they were up in the boxes right up behind us and they were shaking everybody’s hands. It was like one of the coolest things and we thought 'they are just like everybody else.'”

“When I use to come, this is his first game, but I when use to come over here, we used to see George and Barbara on the sidelines. They used to say hi to the players that were used to seeing them go out to the dugout and talk to Bob McNair. Rest in peace, Bob McNair. We knew that they were really close with him, that they always came over here,” says Leonardo Rubio.

The pair were also huge Astros fans, attending games together and enjoying the baseball scene. Last year, President Bush was even asked to throw out the first pitch of Game 5 of the World Series. The First Lady was also known to keep track of the score.

From the Rockets to the Texans and the Astros, even some college games, everyone knew how much the two loved to be competitive and how much they loved the city.

“They were tied to the city of Houston. I think they were family. That was just so well-known and they were at all spring events, Texans especially, but I think the Astros, as well. But you know, it was awesome having them here. Just a classy family here in Houston. Democrat or Republican, I think you support of them regardless,” says Jonathan Copley.

“Well they loved Houston, not just Houston sports, and I think showing up to all of our games showed us how much they loved us and we are very proud they loved Houston,” says Amy Stonesifer.

“It’s always been a pleasure to have y’all. We thank you for everything you’ve done for us and God bless your family for sure,” says Nicole Brionez.

"Our condolences to the family. It’s a tough time. We understand losing family members and we wish you the best," Randall Dennis says.
