Grandparents granted bond in international kidnapping case

A couple at the center of an international kidnapping case has been granted bond.

The bond amount has been set at $1.5 million each for Carlos Guimaraes, 67, and his wife Jemima Guimaraes, 65, and both of them must wear electronic monitoring devices which will prohibit them from leaving Harris County.

Prosecutors are appealing the bond decision and the federal district judge presiding over the case will decide next week on the status of the appeal. They are accused of keeping their grandson in Brazil after the boy's mother brought him to the South American country during her divorce proceedings with the boy's father. Chris Brann, the child's father, has been fighting to regain custody of his son since 2013.

Brann's attorney Jared Woodfill released the following statement:

I'm hopeful they will abide by the judge's ruling...and that Nico will ultimately be returned to the United States.
