Elderly woman accused of bank robbery returns money, surrenders to police

An elderly woman is under investigation after allegedly robbing a bank and later surrendering to police, authorities said.

Gardendale Police in Alabama said the woman entered a Regions Bank on April 10 and presented a note demanding money. 

After obtaining the money, the woman went directly to the Gardendale Police Department and voluntarily turned it over, authorities said.

Investigators believe she acted alone, and officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Her caregiver has been notified, and the situation is being handled appropriately.

A spokesperson for Regions told WBRC everyone on site was safe, and no injuries were reported.

Charges are under review as the investigation continues. Police said they will release additional information as it becomes available.
