Capital Gazette shooting suspect handed 23-count indictment

The gunman accused of attacking journalists at the Capital Gazette, killing five and injuring others, has been indicted by a grand jury on 23 counts related to the mass shooting, according to officials.

The  Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office announced 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos was indicted on five counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of first-degree assault and 11 counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

Ramos is accused of planning the attack, which claimed the lives of Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters, after a long-standing feud with the Capital Gazette and a history of making threats against the newspaper, according to officials.

On June 28, authorities said Ramos barricaded the back door so that the victims could not get out before he used a pump-action shotgun that was legally purchased about a year ago to carry out the targeted attack.

Charging documents stated that Ramos tried to hide under a desk following the attack but was captured and taken into custody by police.
