Boy dies days after stabbed near southwest Houston school, teen arrested

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Sources tell FOX 26 News that a 14-year-old boy, who was in critical condition after being stabbed near a school in southwest Houston on Wednesday, has died. The Houston Police Department later confirmed the teen had passed away and that a 14-year-old male suspect was arrested in the case.

The young suspect was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for his role in the case.

Police say a fight over a brownie ended with a 14-year-old Houston boy stabbed in the eye and another 14-year-old boy on the run from law enforcement officers.

The Houston Independent School District released the following statement on Friday evening:

We are heartbroken to learn that our student has passed away. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who loved and cared for him.  We had counselors available at Jane Long Academy this week to offer emotional support to students and staff and they will return after Spring Break.

Police say a witness reported seeing the teen arguing with a juvenile suspect when the suspect stabbed the teen outside a convenience store and then ran away the crime scene.

Houston police say the Houston ISD police department was initially investigating the case, but contacted the HPD Homicide Division when the victim's condition worsened.

District Police Chief Paul Cordova said the fight began after school Wednesday outside a convenience store across from the Jane Long Academy in southwest Houston. He said that when the victim was loaded into an ambulance, he still acted as if the fight were continuing.

No identities have been released, but Cordova says investigators have spoken with the suspect's family. He said the incident wasn't believed to be gang-related.
