6 safety threats investigated at Houston-area schools
Six separate safety threats were reported at six separate schools across the Houston area on Monday.
Parents and students remain on high alert following threats made to six Houston-area schools. Officials at Crosby High School, Friendswood Junior High, La Marque High School, Hargrave High School, Angelton Junior High all reported threats. At League City Intermediate, authorities arrested a student for having an uploaded gun.
Four students were arrested in the incidents. A fifth threat is still under investigation.
Three students were arrested in gun-related incidents, and a fourth student was arrested for allegedly making threats on social media.
This comes just days after a shooting at Santa Fe High School on Friday that left 10 people dead, eight students and two teachers, and 13 others injured.
FRIENDSWOOD JUNIOR HIGH
Police say a Friendswood Junior High student was arrested on Monday afternoon after other students alerted the school resource officer about social media threats posted by the suspect.
Following an investigation, the student was taken into custody. The eight grader has been charged with making a terroristic threat.
The Friendswood Police Department says heightened security and safety measures are in place at all Friendswood schools until the end of the year. The measures include an increased police presence in and around all campuses.
Officials ask that parents speak with their children regarding social media and threatening behavior.
CROSBY HIGH SCHOOL
School resource officers and administrators are investigating a shooting threat written on a bathroom wall at Crosby High School.
District officials say the threat alleges a shooting would take place on May 30, and the threat did not name a specific student or group of students.
In a statement, the district said that in the aftermath of school shootings, hoax threats are often made, but the Crosby ISD is not taking lightly any threat made against student safety.
Crosby ISD says a thorough investigation is in progress and appropriate consequences will be taken once there is more information. They encourage anyone who has information regarding this or any other threat to the district.
LEAGUE CITY INTERMEDIATE
A student was arrested on Monday morning at League City Intermediate in Clear Creek ISD, after they were found with an unloaded handgun on campus.
According to a letter sent home to parents informing them of the arrest, another student reported the weapon to an assistant principal.
The student in question had not been to any classes and was in the Student Center at the time the weapon was reported.
A Galveston County Sheriff Liaison Officer, who is stationed at the campus, arrested the student.
The school's principal said, "maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for students at League City Intermediate is our top priority."
HARGRAVE HIGH SCHOOL
A Huffman ISD student was arrested Monday morning at Hargrave High School after he was found with a gun in his backpack, thanks to a tip from another student. Officials say the student was intending to harm himself with the weapon.
Both the student and backpack were immediately taken into custody and the campus was placed on lockdown as a precaution, as the incident was investigated.
In a statement, Hargrave officials said, "We applaud the students who submitted the tip, and encourage them to stay vigilant and say something when they see or hear something."
LA MARQUE HIGH SCHOOL
Officials say a student was arrested at La Marque High School after a student texted someone to bring a gun. No gun was discovered on campus, but Texas City ISD says the district takes all threats seriously. The district released this statement:
Texas City ISD takes all threats, direct and indirect seriously. Because of a threat today, a student has been arrested.
Parents, we want to make sure you know that there was not a gun on campus at LMHS today. We sent a call out to LMHS parents earlier this morning that a student texted someone to bring him one. We have arrested that student. No gun was on campus. We appreciate the quick action of students for reporting what they knew of and saw so that we can keep the campus safe.
