SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Carter drove in the go-ahead run with Houston's third solo homer, rookie Lance McCullers pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Astros enhanced their position in a crowded AL playoff race with their 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. Houston moved with 1 1/2 games of first-place Texas in the AL West and maintained its slim lead in the chase for the second wild card. The Rangers lost 7-4 at home to the Detroit Tigers.

Cowboys quick out in 39-28 loss to Falcons without Romo, Dez

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys were off and running without Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. Joseph Randle had touchdown runs on the Cowboys' first two possessions for a quick lead, and none of Brandon Weeden's 14 pass attempts before halftime hit the ground; he had 13 completions and an interception.

Astros beat Rangers 4-2 to tighten AL West race

HOUSTON (AP) — Dallas Keuchel improved to 15-0 at home this season, pitching the Houston Astros past Texas 4-2 Sunday and cutting the Rangers' lead in the AL West to 2 ½ games. Along with closing in on Texas with a week left in the regular season, the Astros held their lead for the second AL wild card spot. They began the day a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Angels, and stayed 1 1/2 games in front of Minnesota.

Mallett leads Texans to 1st win over Buccaneers

HOUSTON (AP) — Ryan Mallett threw for threw for 228 yards and a touchdown and Alfred Blue had 139 yards rushing with a score to lead the Houston Texans to a 19-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Mallett gave Houston (1-2) an early lead on a 5-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins on the opening drive.

HOUSTON (AP) — Brad Davis scored the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute and the Houston Dynamo held off the Colorado Rapids 3-2 on Saturday night. It was the Dynamo's second win in a row and their first league victory against Colorado in 10 tries goings back to a 1-0 victory at Robertson Stadium on April 19, 2009. Houston (11-12-8) never trailed but twice conceded an equalizing goal to the Rapids' Vicente Sanchez in the first half.

No. 14 Texas A&M rallies for 28-21 OT win over Arkansas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kyle Allen threw for 358 yards, with a 20-yard touchdown to Christian Kirk in overtime as No. 14 Texas A&M completed another late comeback against Arkansas, winning the SEC opener 28-21 on Saturday night. The Aggies (4-0) had a chance to win the game on the final play of regulation, but Taylor Bertolet's 38-yard field goal attempt was just wide right.

Ward leads Houston past Texas State 59-14

HOUSTON (AP) — Greg Ward Jr. accounted for six touchdowns — four passing and two running — and Houston overwhelmed Texas State 59-14 Saturday night. Ward was 17 of 21 for 274 yards and led the Cougars (3-0) in rushing with 91 yards on 10 carries. Tyler Jones threw for 288 yards but had two interceptions for Texas State (1-3).

Ivy's 3 TD passes help Jackson St. top Texas Southern, 34-30

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — La Montiez Ivy completed 22 of 27 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns, and Teddrick Terrell had a sack in the closing seconds to help Jackson State beat Texas Southern 34-30 on Saturday night. Devin Fosselman and Dan Williams each had six receptions and a touchdown. Fosselman finished with 129 yards receiving and Williams added 124 for Jackson State (1-3, 1-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference).

Sam Houston State rolls over Houston Baptist 63-14

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Jeremiah Briscoe and Jared Johnson combined to throw for 455 yards and five touchdowns as Sam Houston State picked up its first win of the season, a 63-14 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday night.

No. 3 TCU outlasts Texas Tech 55-52 on tipped pass

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Aaron Green caught a tipped pass in the back of the end zone with 23 seconds left and No. 3 TCU outlasted Texas Tech 55-52 on Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. On fourth-and-goal from the 4, Trevone Boykin's pass was high to Josh Doctson, but he got a hand on it and Green grabbed the ball as he fell out of the end zone. A video review confirmed Green had control of the ball and got a foot in bounds.
