(AP) — Jarrett Stidham threw for 419 yards and three scores in his first start, Corey Coleman caught a pair of touchdown passes and No. 2 Baylor held on for a 31-24 victory over pesky Kansas State on Thursday night to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive. Stidham, taking over for the injured Seth Russell, also ran for a touchdown to help the Bears (5-0 Big 12, No. 6 CFP) improve to 8-0 for only the second time in school history.

Michael Annett's No. 46 NASCAR stock car destroyed in fire

HScott Motorsports lost two NASCAR stock cars Thursday after a fire started in their car-carrying trailer. The team was transporting the Number 46 cars to Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas when the fire happened outside Tyler, Texas. Michael Annett, who competes full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, is listed as the driver of the car. A spare vehicle from the organizations headquarters in the Carolinas is already enroute. The company operates out of Spartanburg and Mooresville.

Astros' Brocail becomes Rangers new pitching coach

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Rangers hired former reliever Doug Brocail as their pitching coach and Anthony Iapoce as hitting coach Thursday, when they also promoted two Triple-A coaches to complete manager Jeff Banister's on-field staff for next season. Brocail replaced Mike Maddux, who left the AL West champion Rangers last week after seven seasons when the sides failed to agree on a new contract. Maddux was hired Thursday as pitching coach for new Washington manager Dusty Baker.

Harden leads Rockets over Magic in overtime 119-114

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 28 points, including seven in overtime, to help the Houston Rockets outlast the Orlando Magic for a 119-114 victory on Wednesday night. It was a wild, back-and-forth game that was tied 18 times and featured 22 lead changes. Dwight Howard and Harden made back-to-back layups to get things going for Houston in overtime and make it 114-110. Evan Fournier made a basket for Orlando before a three-point play by Harden pushed the lead to 117-112.

No CFP championship game for Houston in 2018, 2019, 2020

Although Houston was considered a candidate city to host a College Football Playoff national championship game in either 2018, 2019 and 2020, three other cities will get those respective honors. Atlanta, New Orleans and Santa Clara, California, were selected to host those College Football Playoff national championship games.

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 37 points, and the Houston Rockets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 110-105 on Monday night for their first win of the season. It was the first loss for the Thunder, who won their first three games while the Rockets dropped their first three. An 8-1 run by the Rockets made it 107-100 with about two minutes left. Harden capped that key stretch with a 3, knocking it down with Russell Westbrook right in his face.
