Houston police shooting: Man allegedly carrying knife shot dead by officers

Houston police say a man with a butcher knife was shot and killed by officers at an apartment complex on Wednesday.

What we know:

The incident unfolded on West Bellfort Avenue, between Fondren Road and Hillcroft Avenue.

Police say someone in the front lobby of the apartment complex called around 11:18 a.m. to report that a man was in the parking lot, making jabbing motions with a butcher knife.

When officers arrived, they were directed to an upstairs apartment unit where the man was last seen.

Police say some people were coming out of the unit as officers approached the unit.

As they approached upstairs, police say the suspect came out with a large knife, and three officers fired shots.

The man, 49, died at the scene.

No officers were injured.

What we don't know:

The man’s identity has not been released.

Police also have not identified the three officers involved but said they were with the department for four-and-a-half years, eight years and 24 years.

What's next:

The Houston Police Department’s Special Investigative Unit, Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are conducting parallel investigations. Body worn camera video will be released within 30 days.
