Gov. Abbott to establish Feb. 2 as Chris Kyle Day

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Chris Kyle, the retired Navy SEAL depicted in the blockbuster movie "American Sniper," will have a day in his honor two years after being killed.

Gov. Greg Abbott plans to sign a proclamation declaring Monday as "Chris Kyle Day" in Texas, where Kyle was raised and lived after serving in Iraq.

"As Lieutenant Governor, I proudly support Governor Abbott's decision declaring Feb. 2 officially as Chris Kyle Day in Texas," said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on Monday. "I appreciate his efforts to recognize this American and Texas hero whose bravery, courage and ultimate sacrifice reminds us all that our freedom has a price."

"We are thankful for not only Chief Petty Officer Kyle's service, but for the men and women that are protecting our freedom and our country, every single day," added Lt. Gov. Patrick.

Kyle is reputed to be the deadliest sniper in American history. Actor Bradley Cooper plays him in a movie based on Kyle's autobiography, "American Sniper," which has made nearly $250 million in theaters.

Kyle and another man were fatally shot in February 2013 at a North Texas gun range. The trial of the suspected gunman, a fellow veteran believed to have mental health issues, starts this month.
