Glenmont Drive shooting: Houston police officer involved in deadly shooting with armed suspect

A suspect is dead following a shootout with Houston police on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Houston police, they received a call just before 4 p.m. of a suspicious man walking westbound on Glenmont. The caller stated the suspicious man had a pink purse and a black handgun. The caller stated the man put the handgun inside the purse.

An officer was dispatched within two minutes and arrived three minutes later, authorities said.

When the officer arrived, they saw the suspicious man walking on Glenmont with the pink purse.

The officer got out of the vehicle and gave commands several times to the man to put the purse down.

Police said the man ignored those commands, reached into the pink purse, pulled out a handgun and pointed the handgun at the officer. At the same time, the officer pulled out his weapon and exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Authorities stated there were several rounds of gunfire exchanged back and forth. Then the officer took cover behind a patrol vehicle and additional gunfire was exchanged.

Police said the man then ran into a nearby apartment complex and the officer gave chase. That's when additional gunfire occurred.

Authorities said the suspect was struck several times. The officer was also grazed in the right side of his abdomen, but was not seriously injured.

The officer then rendered first aid to the suspect, but the suspect died on the scene.

Houston police said the patrol vehicle the officer was driving was struck at least once in the exchange of gunfire.

The officer involved in the shooting has been with the department for 14 months. The officer will be placed on administrative duty until the investigation into the shooting is complete.

Houston police added there was body worn camera video in connection to the shooting. That video will be released within the next 30 days as per protocol.

What we don't know:

Officials did not provide any information on the man as far as his identity. Authorities said they were unsure of any criminal history involving the man.
