Fort Bend families await school assignments as district rolls out boundary changes
New details released on FBISD school closures
New details have been released on the school closures for Fort Bend ISD. FOX 26's Karys Belger explains.
SUGAR LAND, Texas - Fort Bend ISD leaders say they are now working through the next phase of implementation after the board approved new elementary school boundaries and the closure of seven campuses earlier this month.
What we know:
District officials say the process includes verifying student address data, finalizing school assignments, and coordinating transportation and program changes ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
Families are expected to receive address-specific and program-specific information by mid-April, according to district leaders.
In the meantime, the district has launched a section on its website. District leaders say they have also reviewed program placements for more than 1,500 elementary students, including those in specialized programs like special education and dual language.
Additionally, staff impacted by campus closures were expected to begin receiving updates about where they will be reassigned.
What we don't know:
While the district has outlined next steps, some key questions remain, including exactly which schools individual students will be assigned to, what final transportation details will look like, including bus routes and commute times, and how staffing assignments will be finalized across all campuses. There are also unanswered questions about the long-term plan for the school buildings that are closing. District leaders say a committee will be formed at a later date to explore options for the use of those campuses, but no specific plan has been announced.
What they're saying:
Some parents say the process has been difficult to navigate as they wait for more detailed information.
"It’s been hit or miss," said Sean Ogburn, a parent at Sugar Mill Elementary. "I know that the teachers… have been doing the best that they possibly can… but they’re only getting as much information as the school board is giving anybody else."
Ogburn says the uncertainty is making it harder for families to plan ahead—especially with changes that could affect daily routines, including longer commutes.
"I mean, it’s going to add at least 20 minutes to my commute every day," he said.
