HOUSTON - A man wanted in the Dallas area for aggravated sexual assault of a child was shot while authorities tried to take him into custody in Houston on Tuesday morning.
Robert Gregory Johnson III, 32, was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries, authorities say.
Who is Robert Gregory Johnson III?
The backstory:
The Collin County Sheriff’s Office issued a Be On the Lookout alert on social media on Jan. 16, asking for the public’s help to locate Johnson.
The sheriff’s office says Johnson was wanted on a warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child.
FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reported that Johnson had been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old child while he was working as an Uber Health driver in Plano, Texas outside of Dallas.
Johnson was arrested on July 12 and released on bond on July 22.
According to the sheriff’s office, he had removed his ankle monitor in August 2024, and the investigators turned to the public for help after exhausting all other leads trying to find him.
The Collin County Sheriff's Office Gang and Habitual Offender Strike Team worked with the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force to pursue leads and track Johnson’s movements.
Officer-involved shooting in Clear Lake
What we know:
On Tuesday morning, members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force located Johnson at a McDonald's in the 500 block of Bay Area Blvd. in the Clear Lake area of Houston.
Officials said as officials approached the building to go inside, the subject was sitting there and had been there for some time on a daily basis.
That's when, authorities said, Johnson stood up, and officers requested that he comply and even deployed a taser, which had no effect.
Authorities said Johnson then raised an object in the direction of the officer that were inside, and an officer on the outside, who is a Galveston Police Department Officer, saw it as a threat to those inside, and fired on Johnson.
Officials said Johnson continued to be in a manner of not complying, so a Galveston Police Department K-9 was deployed to put an end to the threat. The dog had him and they were able to get him apprehended and handcuffed.
Johnson was the only person injured in the incident.
According to Galveston Police Department Chief Doug Balli, the officer is on paid leave and will have access to mental and emotional health physicians and some time for interviews and a debrief.
The officer will return to duty once the Texas Rangers' investigation is sufficiently extensive and confirms that the officer didn't violate the law.
What we don't know:
Johnson's condition is not known at this time, but the Collin County Sheriff's Office says they expect him to survive.
What's next:
