Bus driver killed in Ala. crash

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - 40 Channelview High School students were on a bus that crashed into a ravine in Alabama. The driver, Harry Caligone, did not survive that crash. The Baldwin County coroner's office in Alabama determined Caligone died as a result of blunt force trauma.

Some of the children were seriously hurt while others were shaken up. The conditions of the patients are improving at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla, including the band director who was injured.

The National Transportation Safety Board launched its investigation on Wednesday with the crash site mapped out and interviewing the students to determine what led to the incident.

The bus was new, only on its second run, and had three-point position seatbelts.

Caligone was scheduled to switch with another driver in Mobile, almost thirty minutes from the crash site. He had been driving for seven and a half hours. Ten hours is the maximum allowed for a driving shift.

Law enforcement officers said he might have been unresponsive just before the crash and that there were no signs he slowed down the bus.

Community activist Harrison Guy was recently selected by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to be co-chair of the mayor's LGBTQ advisory board, but he is now mourning the loss of his father, Caligone.
