Uvalde school shooting trial: Testimony continues as state prosecutes ex-police officer

Former Uvalde CISD officer Adrian Gonzales appeared in court again Friday as witness testimony continued.

Gonzales is charged with 29 counts of abandoning or endangering a child. Prosecutors say he didn't act quickly enough during the 2022 massacre, where 19 students and two teachers were killed.

Thursday, the court was forced to go to recess at 2 p.m. after a juror was faced with an unexpected family emergency.

Friday, Jan. 16, proceedings

The latest:

The trial picked up at 9 a.m. with the testimony of a Texas Ranger. That ranger remained on the stand for around half an hour, answering questions about what he saw at the scene after the shooting.

He told the court he's a specialist in 3D reconstruction of crime scenes, using scanners to document and build a rendering of places where crimes occurred. He described the evidence left at the scene, including markers for shell casings, and walked the court through scans created of Robb Elementary School.

The next witness was a Texas DPS Homeland Security officer, who was working as a Texas Ranger at the time. He told the court he was called to the scene after the shooting as a photographer, and he documented the evidence and spoke with representatives at a funeral home while working on the case.

The second witness remained on the stand for questioning until the court adjourned for the day.

Proceedings are set to continue Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. after a break for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. The trial's hours are set for 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. next week.

Trial for former Uvalde officer

The backstory:

So far in the trial, witness testimony has been heard from former teachers who sheltered in classrooms and district employees who were on the scene during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School. Forensic experts and federal agents have also weighed in on video from the shooting and evidence examined at the scene.

Relatives of victims in the shooting have shared their stories as well. Tuesday, the sister of a victim made an emotional outburst in court, causing a disturbance in which she was escorted from the building.

Thursday, a retired sergeant with the Uvalde Police Department reviewed his bodycam footage from the day of the shooting.

Nearly 400 officers responded to the school on May 24, 2022. More than 70 minutes passed before a tactical team entered, killing the shooter.
