Student's boyfriend opens fire on family while at school, police say

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - If you're lucky, you'll never know the panic Josephine Yerena was feeling as she raced to Houston Can Academy to get her son.

"The school hasn't called me. I was able to text him, but I couldn't call him, because they won't let them use their phones. I just came to pick him up," she said before rushing inside.

Pick him up after she found out about a shooting at the school that put Houston Can Academy on lockdown.

"Teachers told us to get in the corner and turn off the lights and put a blind over the window in the door. We just sat quiet till they told us the lockdown was over," said student Jose Acosta.

Police say a student was getting dropped off by her boyfriend just as school was starting. Her family was already there and they and the boyfriend got in a fight. The boyfriend then pulled out a gun and opened fire. He missed, but bullets struck the school. He fled and responding officers police had to play it safer as they rushed to the campus.

"There was some danger, because it was a time when students were being dropped off. All of the officers communicating on the radio with each other said to be aware," said HPD Commander Tinsley Guin-Shaver.

But they missed him. He'd  jumped back in his charcoal gray BMW with paper tags and took off, leaving behind frantic parents and frightened students.

"It was scary. Yeah, you just never know what is going to happen." Said Acosta.

Police are trying to work out what charges to file, but they won't include kidnapping though, because the girl went willingly. Police won't identify the suspect until he's charged.
