Officer-involved shooting near South Loop West, suspect shot: HPD

Houston police officers are investigating the scene of an officer-involved shooting near NRG on Monday morning.

Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir stated officers were called around 7 a.m. about a suspicious person with a weapon in the 2400 block of South Loop West at an apartment complex.

What we know:

Police responded to the location where they spoke with a security guard who encountered the suspect and said the suspect pointed a weapon at him. The security guard told police he pepper sprayed the victim and the suspect went into a vacant apartment.

According to Bashir, officers made contact with the suspect inside the vacant apartment and gave verbal commands, but the suspect stayed barricaded inside.

At some point, the suspect broke a window from inside and stuck his hand out with what appeared to be a weapon, officers report.

The officers fired shots at the suspects and retreated from the apartment. They gave more commands to the suspect, and he surrendered about five minutes later, Bashir said.

Once he came out of the apartment, officers provided first aid and the suspect was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He is expected to survive, according to Assistant Chief Bashir.

 The suspect has allegedly been arrested before at the location.

What we don't know:

The identity of the suspect has not been released by the Houston Police Department.

It has not been reported where the suspect was shot and how many times.
