Black History - Houston Negro Hospital
The city's first nonprofit hospital for African American patients was built in Houston's Third Ward in 1926. The houston negro hospital was also a work place for black physicians. In 1961 a new wing and a new name - Riverside General. The hospital was plagued in its final years with financial and legal troubles before shutting its doors. Harris County purchased riverside out of federal bankruptcy, in 2018. The 7-year plan is to raise funds and revive it as a mental health facility.
