Man shot, killed by deputies in Channelview, officials say

A man has died after a shooting involving deputies in the Channelview area, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

What we know:

The shooting was reported on Ridlon Street, near the East Freeway and Sheldon Road.

At about 3:45 p.m., officials say deputies responded to a report of a man claiming to be a police officer.

The deputies asked the man for his ID, but officials say the suspect "became increasingly evasive and suspicious" before pulling out a gun.

Based on the initial investigation, authorities believe the man shot at the deputies first, then the deputies fired back.

The suspect was hit by the gunfire. Deputies reportedly tried to help the man, and paramedics were called to assist, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deputies involved were not hurt.

What we don't know:

The suspect has not been identified at this time.

The deputies involved also haven't been named at this time. Officials say one deputy is 37 years old with 13 years on duty, and the other is 40 years old with 4.5 years on duty.

What's next:

Homicide and Crime Scene investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) are investigating this incident. The findings will be given to the Harris County District Attorney's Office (HCDAO) and reviewed by a grand jury.

The HCSO Internal Affairs division and the HCDAO Civil Rights will also open independent investigations.
