Thursday marks three years since four Idaho students were stabbed to death in their off-campus rental home in Moscow, Idaho, a grisly crime that gained national attention.
Bryan Kohlberger, the murder suspect in the case, is now serving life in prison after confessing to the murders and taking a plea deal to avoid the death penalty in July 2025.

What happened in the Idaho murders case?
The backstory:
On Nov. 13, 2022, University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were stabbed to death on the second and third floors inside their rental home near the campus.
Surviving roommates called friends to the house because they believed one of the second-floor victims had passed out.
New photos from Idaho murders crime scene revealed
Authorities have released new photos showing scenes within the Moscow, Idaho home where four University of Idaho students were murdered in November 2022 by Bryan Kohberger.

FOX News reported that a call to 911 was placed from one of the surviving roommates' phones at 11:58 a.m. from inside the home, reporting an unconscious person. Police said multiple people spoke to the dispatcher.
Authorities arrested suspect Bryan Kohberger, 28, in eastern Pennsylvania weeks after the attack and brought him back to Idaho, where he faced four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in their deaths.

In October 2025, Bryan Kohberger agreed to a plea deal, ending the case before it could go to trial. This move occurred days after prosecutors added his sister, Amanda Kohberger, to their witness list.
FOX News obtained unsealed court documents showing that Amanda Kohberger appeared on the state’s amended witness list and was also named on the defense’s mitigation witness list by lead attorney Anne Taylor.

Kohberger was studying for a Ph.D. in criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. That's 10 miles up the road from Moscow, Idaho, where all four victims were undergrads at the University of Idaho.
FOX News reported that the plea deal came as a surprise and prosecutors did not anticipate the move and fought to keep the death penalty on the table in pretrial proceedings.
Kohberger's defense revealed his autism diagnosis and complained about discovery deadlines it claimed that prosecutors missed.
