Teen shot in Harris County neighborhood

The Harris County Sheriff's Office and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD police provide an update on a shooting in a neighborhood near Cypress Lakes High School. The shooting did not occur on campus, but the school and two others were temporarily placed in "secure the building mode" during the investigation.

An investigation is underway after a teenager was shot to death in a west Harris County neighborhood near a high school on Tuesday morning.

The sheriff’s office said 17-year-old Jake Mason was shot to death in the 5800 block of Brenwood Trails Lane around 10:30 a.m.

The teen was shot to death where Brenwood Trails Lane ends behind Cypress Lakes High School, but not on school grounds. Authorities said it wasn’t clear if the teen had any connection to the school.

According to Gonzalez, Mason was at the location waiting to pick up his girlfriend who is a student at the school. 

Officials said Mason was with a group of unidentified male when an altercation occurred and an unidentified male shot Mason. 

Authorities say multiple shots were fired.

The suspected shooter fled on foot. Authorities said the shooter is described as a Black male juvenile wearing all black. 

After the shooting, Cy-Fair ISD said Cypress Lakes High School, McFee Elementary School, and Emery Elementary School were placed in "secure the building mode," but it has since been lifted.

The motive behind the shooting is unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
