Family of 24-year-old Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy files wrongful death lawsuit following I-45 crash

The parents of 24-year-old Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy Erika Serrato have filed a wrongful death lawsuit following a deadly crash that took Erika's life at the end of June.

What we know:

The lawsuit targets Ian Perez, 20, who is charged in the crash as well as several companies.

According to a statement about the lawsuit, Deputy Serrato’s parents are seeking compensation for the loss of their daughter’s life, as well as the mental anguish and other losses they have experienced and will continue to experience.

What we don't know:

The statement did not include the amount of compensation that is being sought following the deadly crash.

The other side:

FOX 26 has reached out to the company listed in the lawsuit. As of this writing, we have not received a reply. 

Deadly crash on I-45

Deputy Serrato died after a crash along I-45 in The Woodlands early in the morning on June 28.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Serrato was directing traffic at the scene of a previous crash when a heavy-duty commercial motor vehicle pulling a trailer struck her.

The sheriff’s office says Perez was driving the commercial vehicle. He was charged with passing certain vehicles causing bodily injury.
