Residents of The Woodlands to vote on becoming stand-alone city Tuesday

Residents from The Woodlands are set to vote on two propositions this week that could transition the township district into its own stand-alone city.

The luxury, master-planned community was recently named one of the best places to live in the U.S.

This Tuesday, November 2nd, residents of The Woodlands can vote "for" or "against" incorporation to become its own city.

If passed, Prop A and Prop B would grant incorporation and set an initial property tax rate of no more than approximately 22 cents per $100 of taxable property. It would also transfer all governmental authority to the city of The Woodlands.

"We’re looking forward to becoming our own city. There’s a lot of activities here to do. The kids, we take them fishing, swimming, to the parks. There’s a lot of trails so it’s exciting. We’ve been here about seven years," Woodlands resident, Salvador Lopez said.

While Salvador Lopez and his daughter Arianna are excited about the possibility, other long-time residents like Chantel Steininger don’t see the need for the change.

"I think at this point we don’t need to break what’s not broken. I think we’ve been a great city and there’s no need to change anything. I’ve been living here for 12-13 years now so I don’t think we need to do anything at all," said Steininger.

Those for incorporation believe gaining local control will be beneficial for maintaining the highly rated quality of life. However, those against are skeptical about the costs.

Less than a week ago, Congressman Kevin Brady issued a public letter to his constituents, urging them to vote no, citing higher costs, bigger bureaucracy, and higher taxes.

Brady echoes similar sentiments to The Howard Hughes Corporation, the township’s largest developer.

Residents can vote on Prop A and Prop B this Tuesday.
