Armed robbery at Conroe ATM leaves armored carrier shot; suspect dead

A money carrier was shot during a robbery at a Bank of America ATM in Conroe Monday morning, leading to a police chase that ended with the suspect dead from what authorities say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Money carrier shot

The backstory:

According to Conroe Police Chief Jon Buckholtz, dispatch received a 911 call just before 8:30 a.m. reporting a man bleeding in the 1900 block of North Frazier.

When officers arrived, they found a money carrier had been shot and that cash was missing.

Police said officers quickly began gathering witness statements and searching for the suspect vehicle. Authorities located the vehicle and said the suspect then got onto I-45 northbound.

Investigators say officers later conducted a felony stop in the 4500 block of I-45, south of FM 830. During that stop, police said the suspect refused commands from officers and then shot himself in the head.

Authorities say the armored carrier was transported by Montgomery County Hospital District to a hospital in Conroe. Police say he is expected to survive.

Investigators said the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and upper torso/neck area.

Police also confirmed the stolen money was recovered.

She said she briefly spoke to the man in a Brinks uniform who said he was going to service the machine. Bunn said she told the worker to stay alert.

"I said ‘be safe, look at your surroundings, be careful,’" she said. "And he said ‘thank you very much’ and I said ‘God bless you.’"

She later returned to the area and saw the crime scene.

Conroe police said Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with the traffic stop. Authorities said all law enforcement officers involved are okay.
