15 and 17-year-old charged for allegedly shooting at Houston police

A 17-year-old has been charged after allegedly shooting at Houston Police Department officers over the weekend in southeast Houston.

Alexis Otoniel Martinez will face an aggravated assault against public servant charge after firing at officers on Saturday.

A 15-year-old juvenile female suspect was also charged for her part in the shooting and faces the same charge as Martinez.

Police say two people who are believed to be teen suspects were injured in a shooting involving officers on Saturday afternoon

Park Place Boulevard police shooting

What we know:

HPD Senior Police Officer R. Benavides and Senior Police Officer F. Jaimes were called to 8360 Park Place Boulevard about a suspicious person with a weapon around 1 p.m.

The property manager told officers two people were seen going into an empty apartment. When officers entered, one suspect pointed a weapon at them, officers say.

According to authorities, the officers backed away from the door and gave verbal commands for the suspects to surrender. The teens broke through an apartment window, fled to the back of the complex, and started shooting at police, who returned fire.

Martinez was shot in the upper body and was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center where he is still hospitalized. The juvenile female was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The HPD officers involved were not injured.

What we don't know:

HPD has not said why the suspects entered the empty apartment.

Who were the HPD officers involved?

Senior Police Officer R. Benavides and Senior Police Officer F. Jaimes were sworn in September 1994 and January 2013 respectively. Both are assigned to Eastside Patrol Division.

The incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office as is protocol for officer-involved shootings in Houston.
