HOUSTON - The City of Houston is looking to officially rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard following revelations the once iconic labor leader was a sexual predator.
Houston City Council looking to remove Cesar Chavez Boulevard name
What we know:
Mayor John Whitmire announced an expedited outreach to 38 businesses located along the thoroughfare aimed at gaining their approval to strip Chavez's name from what was once known as 67th Street.
Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia appeared before Council to urge the name change and nominate another labor movement icon as the new honoree.
"We have to be clear. No legacy, no matter how historic and impactful, places anyone above accountability. I believe and stand with the victims. Their courage matters and they deserve to be heard. This is not about erasing history. It's about making a clear choice. If we are going to rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard, then we should do it in a way that honors the movement and the people who carried it forward. We should re-name it Dolores Huerta Boulevard," said Garcia.
A well-known leader of the farm worker's movement, Huerta has revealed she was also the victim of Chavez's assaults.
What's next:
The process of renaming Cesar Chavez Boulevard for Huerta could take as long as five months.
